The opening week shapes the rest of a freelance project. The goal is not to produce everything immediately; it is to replace assumptions with a shared view of the work.
Day one: confirm the outcome
Restate the objective, scope, deliverables and definition of done in plain language. Confirm who makes decisions and where project communication will live.
Days two and three: gather the useful inputs
Collect source files, access, examples and constraints. The freelancer should flag missing information early and explain which decisions depend on it. The client should identify what is current and what may be outdated.
Days four and five: show direction before polish
Share a first structure, prototype, outline or technical approach. Early work should make the important choices discussable without spending time polishing a direction that may change.
Days six and seven: agree on the delivery rhythm
Capture decisions, adjust milestones and confirm the next review point. A short written recap prevents the same questions from returning later.
Momentum comes from visible decisions, not constant activity.
A good first week leaves both sides knowing what is happening, what is needed next and how progress will be judged. That clarity is one of the most valuable deliverables in the project.
